Missing Something?
Ephesians 6:13-17 “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground…Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Jennifer’s multiple brain surgeries wiped her brain clean. She remembered almost none of the basics of life and had to start all over. Apparently this is common in brain trauma. She spent three months in a rehab learning how to eat, talk, walk, count, read, etc… When she came home she was at a mental age of five. Dr Anderson, her neurologist, said not to worry, she would continue to improve, just keep working with her. So I did.
Driving home from the grocery store one day we were praying together in the car. I started praying for the armor of God to cloth each one in our family. When I was done Jen had questions. “What is that?” she asked. “It’s scripture, honey” I answered. I immediately saw it as a teachable moment to instill scripture in her heart, so I launched into an age appropriate explanation of the armor of God. I described each piece of armor that we can put on as Christians and what it represents. We went through the whole wardrobe: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the belt of truth, the shield of faith, the sword of Gods word and wearing shoes that keep you ready.
I smiled. I had done well explaining that I thought…until I looked over at Jen. She was looking right at me. The look on her face was half perplexed and half horror. Suddenly concerned by this unexpected response I asked “What’s the matter?”
“Momma….where’s our pants?”
I laughed so hard I almost had to pull the car over. I laughed for hours. Out of the mouth of babes! No wonder we get our hinnies kicked by satan in this world, I told her…We aren’t wearing any pants! Our hind ends have been bared to our enemy the whole time! Gives new meaning to “I see your hinny all white and shiny”.
What a sense of humor God has. You know He inspired Paul to write that scripture years ago knowing someday, someone would figure out we weren’t wearing pants. I know He laughed with me that night as I laid in bed and pondered all of this. I thanked Him for what He had given us that day and expressed my love for His Word. And as I closed my eyes I prayed “And God, tomorrow, please put on my pants”.
